A 25-year-old male Loss Prevention Officer was stabbed Saturday evening after a woman allegedly stole a jacket.
According to police, the Loss Prevention Officer (LPO) from a retail store on Hamilton Street near Saskatchewan Drive witnessed a 31-year-old woman putting on a jacket from the store then allegedly leaving the store without paying.
Police said the woman tried to get away, which resulted in a physical altercation with the loss prevention officer outside. She then allegedly took out a knife and stabbed the security guard.
The woman was handcuffed by the security guard and Regina police arrived and took the woman into custody. Police seized a bag along with additional stolen merchandise.
Sears Canada has confirmed the incident happened at the company’s store in the Cornwall Centre in downtown Regina.
The security guard was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Janelle Ruth Harriet Sangwais has been charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon. She was also charged with theft shoplifting under $5,000 and failure to comply.
Vincent Power, a spokesperson with Sears, said the loss prevention officer appeared to have been stabbed in the upper shoulder area.
Sangwais appeared in provincial court on Monday morning at 9:30 a.m.
Police have not released the name of the loss prevention officer. Power said the employee is recovering well and might be back at work in the next couple of days.
