GOULAIS RIVER, Ont. – Police in northern Ontario say an investigation into a car theft now has them combing the woods as they search for two teenagers.

Sault Ste. Marie OPP say ground and air services are searching the area around Goulais River for a 14-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy.

Const. Monique Baker say the teens came to their attention on Thursday when police got reports of a car driving erratically in Sault Ste. Marie.

She says officers determined that the car had been stolen from Huntsville, Ont., but says the teens drove away before police could pull them over.

She says the car was found abandoned about 30 kilometres north of Sault Ste. Marie and the teens were believed to have fled into the woods on foot.

Baker says police took a 17-year-old boy into custody, but are still searching for the other two teens and cautioning the public to be alert.

The OPP are warning residents to keep their homes and doors locked and to report any suspicious activity, and are also urging drivers not to offer rides to hitchhikers.

Baker said police have issued the warnings out of an abundance of caution, saying it is not known if the teens are armed or have violent tendencies.

“We don’t know what they have in their possession,” she said. “Therefore we’d rather err on the side of caution and not have residents take matters into their own hands.”

Baker said charges are pending against the 17-year-old, but had no further details.
