WINNIPEG — Chris Okell has spent the last few years carving giant pumpkins into giant jack-o-lanterns as part of a fundraiser in honour of his mother who passed away from cancer in 2010.

But this year, vandals destroyed one of the two giant gourds.

“I felt bad for my son because he’s 12 years old and you’re trying to show him there is more good than bad in the world,” Okell said.

Despite the setback, Okell still plans on carrying on with the carving and the fundraiser for CancerCare Manitoba.

“They left me one, so my spirit is not broken. We are still doing the pumpkin promise as always,” Okell said.
