Sara Gibeau is doing well one year after her brother, Simon Gibeau, 14, went trick-or-treating for two while she battled leukemia.
This year, the brother-and-sister duo will be able to go trick-or-treating together.
“They will both be going out for Halloween, although we don’t know how long Sara will last as she still gets tired very quickly,” Lucie Beaulieu, Sara’s mother, told Global News.
“I’m sure Simon will push her to continue, as there will be candy at stake!”
Despite battling cancer, the 12-year-old passed Grade 5 with the help of an in-house tutor and has since rejoined her friends for Grade 6.
“She still misses quite a few days for illness and treatment,” explained Beaulieu, adding that she gets lumbar punctures every two months and is still on medications that give her side effects.
“We have 51 weeks of chemo left as treatment for leukemia is just over two years. She takes oral chemo every day and has chemo once per week also.”

Last year, Simon dressed in a hospital gown, his sister’s hat and wore a poster with pictures of Sara before and during cancer treatment.
“I’m saying that I care about her,” he explained.
Beaulieu told Global News she loved seeing the siblings stick together during such a difficult time.
“It’s great that he’s stepping up and being the good big brother I know he can be,” she said.
“She still has quite a way to go, but this kid is such a tough cookie, I have no doubt that she will beat this.”
The family is staying positive and already has big plans for Sara’s 13th birthday next year.
“Hopefully at this time, next year, she will be treatment free,” said Beaulieu.
“If so, we will have a whopping big celebration for her 13th birthday on Nov. 3.”
Sara was also recently the spokesperson for the Leucan Monteregie Shaved Head Challenge, raising over $6,000 with the total regional amount close to $40,000.
