Accused in Hilary Bonnell murder taken to hospital after collapsing at Miramichi courthouse

MIRAMICHI, N.B. – A New Brunswick man on trial for the murder of his 16-year-old cousin has been taken to hospital.

Curtis Bonnell arrived at Miramichi courthouse Wednesday morning, for his third day on the stand in the the first-degree murder trial, but left shortly after in an ambulance.

The 32-year-old, from Esgenoopetitj First Nation, is accused of murdering Hilary Bonnell in Sept. 2009.

Bonnell returned to court at around 1:30 p.m. and said he wishes to continue with the trial.

Bonnell’s lawyer said he found his client lying on the floor of his holding cell.

“Curtis was brought in, complained of numbness and tingling in his arms and a tightness in his chest,” defence lawyer Gilles Lemieux said.

Crown prosecutor Bill Richards began the cross examination of Bonnell Tuesday afternoon.

Richards reminded Bonnell of police statements he made in 2009, referring to the accused’s claim he has a Hyde-like personality when he’s furious.

Richards asked Bonnell if he remembers picking up Hilary, having sex or hitting her. Bonnell said no. When asked if Bonnell remembered killing his cousin, he said he didn’t remember and that he didn’t think so.

The defence wrapped up two days of examination Tuesday.

Bonnell testified that the next morning, police told him it was time to take Hilary home. He then led police to her burial site in Tabusintac.
