Lachine mayor Claude Dauphin said he is disappointed the Caisse de Dépôt‘s new $5-billion electric train network has seemingly left the borough off the map.

There are currently two main ways to get downtown from the Montreal borough: the train and the bus.

Dauphin insisted it is tough going for people living in the Montreal borough to get downtown and construction on a new AMT train station isn’t enough.

The Gare du Canal, on the Candiac Line, is scheduled to open early next year, complete with a parking lot that would hold 150 vehicles.

Lachine will then have two stations to serve its 42,000 residents, but Dauphin insists trains and buses aren’t enough.

He is calling for a dedicated tramway to help move commuters from the borough to downtown Montreal.

Right now, about 23 per cent of residents use public transit to get around, and the mayor insists that number hasn’t budged in a decade.

Dauphin is hoping a new tramway or similar line will boost mass transit use in Lachine.
