Edmontonians may soon have to separate their garbage

Most Edmonton residents recycle and the city boasts a world-renowned Waste Management Facility, but do we really know what we’re doing?

According to the city, 93 per cent of citizens participate in the voluntary blue bag recycling program but items are still being placed in the wrong bag.

On Wednesday, the city introduced WasteWise, an app that shows people what waste items should be reused, recycled, taken to an Eco Station or placed in the garbage.

“Edmontonians have told us they want more information about how to sort their waste and WasteWise helps to address that need,” Connie Boyce, director of Community Relations for Utility Services, said.

“This new tool makes it extremely easy to find a quick answer when you’re wondering where a waste item belongs. And it helps us keep more waste out of the landfill by placing items in the proper stream at home.”

The app also provides collection schedules and allows residents to set reminders for their collection day.
