City encourages Edmontonians to galvanize around garbage

EDMONTON – The City of Edmonton wants everyone to get serious about picking up garbage now that spring is here.

Mayor Don Iveson was on hand for a Capital City Clean Up event Monday morning on Jasper Avenue that hopes to motivate Edmontonians to get involved in one of the city’s litter programs.

“To have so many volunteers and businesses turn out and help make our city a more beautiful and cleaner place to…this kind of participation shows the best of Edmontonians coming together,” Iveson said.

“Whether organizations take part in the Business Supporting Community program or people Adopt a Block to clean throughout the summer, everyone can help reduce litter in Edmonton by getting involved.”

The Capital City Clean Up’s Business Supporting Community offers Edmonton companies a chance to combat litter while supporting local non-profit groups.

Businesses pay organizations to pick up litter as a fundraiser.

In 2015, the initiative raised about $83,000. Since 2007, the businesses have given nearly $400,000 to non-profit organizations through the program.

Last year, 1,887 people and 53 corporate and media partners took part in the city’s litter programs.
