Search for missing New Westminster mother in Stanley Park suspended

The search for a young New Westminster mother who went missing is continuing despite a search of Stanley Park being called off on Thursday afternoon.

Thirty-two-year-old Florence Leung was last seen at approximately 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, leaving her home in the 1500-block of London Street. Investigators say they have also been made aware that she may be experiencing postpartum depression and they are concerned for her well-being.

As a new mother, she is considered a high-risk missing person. Leung left her residence alone in her white Audi Q5 (pictured below).

Her car was found in Stanley Park around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

New Westminster Police said they don’t suspect any foul play.

North Shore Rescue searched for Leung in Stanley Park until Thursday afternoon before police suspended the search after finding no signs of her.

Leung is described as Chinese, approximately 5’6” tall, with a slim build, long black hair and black eyes. Officers are actively investigating locations where Leung may be and are following up on all possible leads.

“We’re very concerned about her well-being, and our Major Crime Detectives are working tirelessly to locate Mrs. Leung,” Acting Sgt. Jeff Scott said in a statement.

“After locating her vehicle in Stanley Park, the VPD and Northshore Search and Rescue thoroughly searched the area, but she has yet to be located. We have no reason to believe that there has been any foul play, but our team of detectives continue to actively follow-up on every lead that we receive.”

Postpartum depression is depression that may start during pregnancy or at any time up to a year after the birth of a child.

It is estimated anywhere from six to 13 per cent of moms in Canada experience the condition.
