Lilydale, one of the largest poultry companies in Canada is facing tough questions today after an undercover video allegedly revealed some questionable practices at one of their facilities.

Mercy for Animals, an animal rights group, has just released hidden-camera footage from one of Lilydale’s slaughterhouses showing turkeys being shackled, shocked and scaled alive, all while still allegedly conscious.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The footage was taken by an undercover volunteer who was working in the Abbotsford slaughterhouse.

The group is calling for the entire poultry industry to change its current practices immediately.

“Everything we documented at Lilydale is considered normal in the poultry industry,” said Matt Rice with Mercy for Animals. “This isn’t a matter of Lilydale failing to meet industry standards, this is a matter of poultry industry standards allowing for blatant animal abuse. As such, Mercy For Animals is calling on Lilydale and its parent company Sofina Foods to end some of the worst forms of animal abuse at their facilities by quickly switching to less cruel slaughter systems that eliminate the horrific suffering.”
