Lilydale, one of Canada’s largest poultry producers, is facing animal cruelty charges for transporting chickens during a cold snap in B.C. two years ago.
The chicken producer, which is part of Sofina Foods, is facing four counts under the Health of Animals and Meat Inspection acts.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency claims Lilydale exposed its birds to freezing temperatures in January 2012, causing them undue pain and suffering.
On the day in question, the company allegedly moved chickens from Chilliwack to Port Coquitlam in -12 C weather.
The BC SPCA is calling for more humane rules around the transport of farm animals.
A company spokesperson for Lilydale said they are cooperating with the CFIA.
