Freezing rain warning remains in eastern Alberta, dropped in Edmonton

Environment Canada issued a freezing rain warning Saturday afternoon for much of central Alberta, including the City of Edmonton.

The weather agency said periods of freezing rain are expected to begin overnight. On Sunday, the conditions could change to rain showers.

“Patchy freezing rain ahead of the [low pressure] system will begin in the Rocky Mountain House region this evening and then spread northeastward overnight hitting the Capital Region early Sunday morning and then exiting the province into Saskatchewan in the afternoon,” Environment Canada said.

As of 4 p.m., the areas under the freezing rain warning were:

  • Bonnyville, St. Paul, Cold Lake, Lac La Biche
  • Edmonton, St. Albert, Sherwood Park
  • Drayton Valley, Devon, Rimbey, Pigeon Lake
  • Fort Saskatchewan, Vegreville, Redwater, Smoky Lake
  • Leduc, Camrose, Wetaskiwin, Tofield
  • Lloydminster, Wainwright, Vermillion, Provost
  • Rocky Mountain House, Caroline
  • Spruce Grove, Morinville, Mayerthorpe, Evansburg
  • Westlock, Barrhead, Athabasca
  • Whitecourt, Edson, Fox Creek, Swan Hills

By Sunday morning, as forecast, the system had moved east and the warning was dropped in Edmonton.

As of 1 p.m. Sunday, the Alberta regions still under the freezing rain warning were:

  • Bonnyville, St. Paul, Cold Lake, Lac La Biche
  • Lloydminster, Wainwright, Vermillion, Provost
