Alberta Fish and Wildlife officers are investigating after a marked grizzly bear was shot and killed near Hinton, Alta. earlier this week.

On Monday night, officers were notified by the fRI Research Grizzly Bear Program that a mature male grizzly bear’s collar was transmitting a mortality sign.

Officers were able to track the bear and found him shot dead along the side of Pembina River Road, about 48 kilometres south of Hinton.

Alberta Fish and Wildlife believe the 450-pound grizzly was killed sometime between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Monday.

Pictures posted on the Alberta Fish and Wildlife Facebook page show the bear slumped over a pile of tree branches.

In Alberta, grizzlies are considered a threatened species and hunting them is illegal. The maximum penalty for poaching a grizzly is a $100,000 fine and/or one year in jail.

Hinton is located about 285 kilometres west of Edmonton.
