After almost two hours, an evacuation at the downtown Regina bus depot had ended.
The bus depot was evacuated after police received a report of a suspicious package around 10:28 a.m.
According to police, they received a call at around 10:28 a.m. that a bus was returning to the depot because of a possible suspicious package on the bus. The vehicle was taken to a bus barn and a member of the Explosive Disposal Unit was at the scene. No other businesses in the area were evacuated.
“I think that the information we received in the initial call was from a supervisor or employee at STC, reporting that the bus was returning to the building,” Regina Police Service spokesperson Elizabeth Popowich said during an interview at the scene.
At around 12:30 police confirmed no suspicious package was found. Police said officers did a complete search of the bus and the building and found nothing unusual.
“It appears the concern came from a misinterpretation of an individual’s behaviour but, upon investigation, police concluded there was no further cause for alarm,” Popowich said in a statement.
Popowich said the police do take all threats like these seriously.
“When we get information like this, our first response is to determine whether or not there’s a risk to people’s safety, to take the appropriate first measures then to gather more information,” Popowich said.
Police also blocked off traffic on Osler Street but have since reopened the street. No injuries were reported.
