Where can you apply for a special permit to keep your pit bull-type dog in Montreal?

Montreal has organized 20 dates in October for residents who own pit bull-type dogs to apply for a special permit in order to keep their dog.

The special permit is now mandatory and includes a $150 fee.

As part of the application process, residents must show a piece of identification, proof of residence and a document that states you are the owner of that dog as of October 3, 2016.

According to the city of Montreal website, owners of pit bull-type dogs can bring veterinary documents to indicate their dog has been vaccinated against rabies, sterilized and/or microchipped as well as a judicial record check when applying for the special permit.

Owners must do so by March 1, 2017.

On Tuesday, city council voted in favour of a bylaw banning new pit bulls and other so-called “dangerous breeds” from living within city limits and enforcing strict regulations on those already living in the city.

Staffordshire bull terriers, American pit bull terriers, American Staffordshire terriers, a mix with these breeds, and dogs that show characteristics of any of the mentioned breeds fall under the new bylaw.
