A mass animal seizure in Langley has forced the Vancouver location of BC SPCA to close indefinitely.

The organization seized 88 animals from the Langley property on Monday.

Forty-five dogs, 18 cats and 24 farm animals and one turtle were seized. Three dead animals were also found on the property.

Chief prevention and enforcement officer for the BC SPCA, Marcie Moriarty, says they received a complaint about animals in distress on the property and obtained a warrant, which resulted in the seizure.

BC SPCA Vancouver branch manager Jodi Dunlop says they are currently closed to the public because of a bio-security concern.

“We don’t have all the test results yet, so we just want to make sure it isn’t contagious to people or other animals in our care, so we are just very, very careful,” Dunlop says.

She says they are hoping to re-open in a couple of weeks and they are asking everyone to be patient.

The dogs and cats seized are being triaged at the Vancouver SPCA shelter and will be assessed to determine on-going treatment. All of the farm animals, which include goats, sheep, hens, roosters, duck, doves, pigeons and a pot-bellied pig, are being treated at the Good Shepherd Barn at BC SPCA’s Surrey Branch.

Dunlop says as they are dealing with the influx of seized animals, they are looking for donations of blankets, cat and dog beds, canned cat and dog food, toys and soft treats for dogs.

WATCH BELOW: Dozens of animals have been seized by the SPCA from a farm in Langley. The organization says the animals are suffering from malnutrition and other medical issues. But as Catherine Urquhart reports, the farm’s owner is fighting back.
