Edmonton police are once again asking drivers to slow down on the High Level Bridge after officers caught several drivers travelling more than double the speed limit overnight.

One motorcyclist was caught travelling 129 kilometres per hour on the bridge, where the speed limit is 50km/h. Five other drivers were caught travelling at least 54km/h over the posted speed limit Tuesday night, police added.

Ten additional tickets were handed out to drivers travelling between 71km/h and 81km/h on the bridge.

“It’s very troubling to know that there are drivers out there who think this is an acceptable way to commute on our city streets,” Sgt. Kerry Bates, EPS Traffic Safety coordinator, said.

“It’s quite astonishing, actually.”

Bates said it’s alarming to see drivers going so quickly on an elevated, narrow roadway.

“Driving at this rate of speed, in an area like this, leaves little room for error and compromises the safety of others significantly.”

This isn’t the first time police have clocked drivers excessively speeding on the High Level. Earlier this month, 25 vehicles were stopped for speeding during a one-day traffic blitz. Four of the vehicles were driving at least 54km/h over the speed limit, including two vehicles that were travelling 118km/h.
