RCMP arrest manslaughter convict who didn’t return to Edmonton facility after temporary leave

Cold Lake RCMP said officers arrested an inmate missing from an Edmonton facility Monday after he never returned to the Stan Daniels Healing Centre after being granted a temporary absence.

Police said Garrett Leland Blackman, who is currently serving a manslaughter sentence, was arrested at a home on the Elizabeth Metis Settlement near the Saskatchewan border.

They said Blackman now faces additional charges of being unlawfully at large as well as obstruction.

He is scheduled to appear in court in Edmonton via CCTV with regard to the being unlawfully at large charge on Sept. 27.

Blackman is then scheduled to appear in Cold Lake Provincial Court via CCTV to face a charge of obstruction the following day.

He has since returned to the Stan Daniels Healing Centre to serve the remainder of his sentence.
