The City of Victoria is bidding farewell to a small slice of summer.

Just like they usually do this time of year, Victoria city crews are taking down the city’s trademark hanging flower baskets.

They are a summer-time tradition in the City of Gardens, with about 1,300 baskets installed on city’s downtown lampposts in June.

But with fall just around the corner, it’s time to put the baskets away.

It will take several days to remove the sun and shade baskets. The plant material and soil will be composted at the Beacon Hill Parks Yard and the hardware will be dismantled, cleaned and stored for reuse next year.

However there’s one change to the program this year thanks to the pending visit from the Royals.

“Around the legislature and the Empress, we’re taking the sun baskets down and there’s a crew going behind us hanging the shade baskets, so there will be some baskets left for the royal visit this Saturday,” said Dan Macbeth with the City of Victoria.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, along with their children Prince George and Princess Charlotte, are set to arrive in Victoria on Saturday afternoon.

They will travel to Victoria with the Royal Canadian Air Force and will be greeted at Victoria Airport before moving to Government House – where they will be based throughout the tour – for a very brief stop.

They will then make their way to the B.C. legislature where they will officially open the tour by paying their respects at Victoria’s Cenotaph and will unveil a plaque paying tribute to the veterans of Canada’s involvement in the Afghanistan conflict.

This official welcome will be open to the public and it will feature an honor guard and speeches. Following this event Their Royal Highnesses will return to Government House where they will have meetings with senior Canadian leaders.
