VANCOUVER – British Columbia’s civilian police watchdog, the Independent Investigations Office, has sent a report to Crown about a fatal police shooting nearly two years ago in Vancouver.
Forwarding the report is the next step in a process that could lead to charges against the officer who fired the fatal shot.
The shooting occurred on Nov. 22, 2014, as police responded to reports of a man acting erratically and waving a two-by-four piece of lumber.
Police said at the time that projectiles from a bean bag gun had no effect on the man who was shot when he walked toward officers and refused to comply with commands to drop the two-by-four.
The IIO said in a news release that the Criminal Justice Branch lays charges only when it is satisfied there is a substantial likelihood of conviction based on evidence gathered by the investigating agency.
The IIO examines all cases of police involved serious injury or death in B.C., but does not make a recommendation on whether charges should be approved.
