Curtis Road has been the focus of a long-running legal dispute.
In February 2015, the court ruled cyclists travelling to certain buildings at UBC’s Okanagan campus could use it.
But too many others were taking advantage of the shortcut, so the B.C. Supreme court has now ruled only residents of Curtis Road can use it.
“I ride every day,” said Neil Cadger, a professor at the university. “I know it’s illegal but I am continuing to ride.”
Safe cycling options to get to UBCO have been an issue for years.
Highway 97 is the only official route.
“What they need to do is pave the rails to trails from Kelowna right out here, like, first priority,” said Cadger.
The city plans to build a brand new road connecting Glenmore Road and the campus.
While John Hindle Drive isn’t expected to be complete until the fall of 2018, the university believes it will be a good solution.
“Ultimately we will have the long term benefit of opening a public, paved pathway from Glenmore through to the university campus.” said Bud Mortenson, Director of University Relations.
