A 20-year old man is going to jail for 18 years, after stalking, torturing and assaulting a North Kildonan family.
Judge Rob Finlayson called it a “sadistic” crime and that it “boggles his mind” how a human being can contemplate such an attack, saying the accused was “a very disturbed young man.”
In 2010, a 18-year old man, who we’re not naming due his previous past with the law, followed the family’s 17-year old daughter home. He knocked on the their door and began terrorizing them for 90 minutes.
Court heard, he barged into the home with a gun and knife, tied up the family, stabbed the father nine times, dropped a TV on his head and forced the family to perform sex acts on each other, claiming he was “having fun”.

After an hour and a half, the father, beaten and hurt gained the strength to overpower the suspect and with help from his 15-year old son, they held the suspect until police arrived.
Court heard the accused lied about hearing voices and that the devil told him to do it.
The Crown asked for a life sentence, while the defence wanted 12 years in jail.
Judge Rob Finlayson sentenced the accused to 20 years minus 2 years for time already served.
The accused’s family gasped out loud in court as the mom put her head in her hands but her son, the accused had no reaction.
The victims were in court as well, and cried as the details of the attack were read.
When the accused was 17-years old, he was arrested by police for carrying a knife. He told police at the time, he wanted to kill and hurt people.
He was checked into the Health Science Centre Physic ward and after 5 days was released, claiming he made up the story and was fine.
His lawyer claims he was a victim too and wanted help but people didn’t take him serious.
Judge Rob Finlayson said, “In my view the system failed the accused, the (victim’s)family and society by releasing him without further testing.”
The family has since moved saying they couldn’t continue to live in the house where they lived through this nightmare.
