‘We heard four or five gunshots’: neighbours recount West Kelowna takedown

West Kelowna RCMP responded to a report of shots fired in the Boucherie Road area just after 9 a.m.

A 46-year-old West Kelowna man was taken into custody but has since been released without charge.

A neighbour told Global News police knocked on his front door and told him and his wife to hide in the basement. While they were down there, he said he heard what sounded like multiple gunshots.

“We heard four or five gunshots,” the neighbour recounts.

A Global Okanagan crew on scene confirms RCMP near Quails Gate winery did draw their guns during the incident. Police have not confirmed whether or not they discharged their weapons.

West Kelowna RCMP closed down part of Boucherie Road between Montigny Road and Mission Hill Road for about an hour while the incident was unfolding.

As for the initial gunshot reports, RCMP are still investigating and say they are “mindful of the common use of air cannons in area orchards and vineyards used to scare birds and have not yet ruled this out as being a possible explanation.”
