An abandoned home in Kelowna was scorched early Monday morning in a fire officials are calling suspicious.

“The house is a total loss,” Kelowna Fire Department platoon captain Steve Wallick said in a news release.

An investigation will be launched into what caused the flames to spark at the unoccupied residence in the 600 block of Mugford Road in Kelowna.

The local fire department’s dispatch centre got a 911 call about the home on fire around 2:30 a.m.

“The first arriving crew also noticed power lines laying in the driveway, blocking access,” Wallick said.

“Fire crews managed to subdue the flames while staying clear of the downed power lines.”

Fortis was called in and the power to the live wires was cut and while no one was hurt, he situation has officials putting out a safety message.

“[We] would like to remind everyone to treat any downed power line as if it were live,” Wallick said.

Three KFD fire engines with 16 personnel, a rescue truck, command vehicle and safety officer responded to the scene along with Fortis, B.C. Ambulance Service and RCMP.
