2 new Canadians slashed with a knife in broad daylight

WINNIPEG — Two new immigrants to Manitoba are recovering after being slashed with a knife last Thursday.

It happened at around 7 p.m. in the 300 block of Portage Avenue.

Police said the man and woman were taking a class for new Canadians. They went outside and were approached by a suspect who was trying to sell them something. When they declined, the suspect pulled at the woman’s purse and took out a knife.

The two were slashed with the knife and the suspect fled on foot. Both victims were taken to hospital and are recovering.

The woman’s purse was recovered with the help of witnesses and the suspect was later found in a hotel on Albert Street.

The suspect is a 36-year-old man and is facing the following five charges:

  • Aggravated assault
  • Robbery
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Possession of a weapon
  • Uttering threats
