Flooding prompts emergency alert for county west of Edmonton

The province of Alberta issued an emergency alert for Lac Ste. Anne County Tuesday afternoon after heavy rainfall caused overland flooding throughout the area.

According to the alert, culverts are “working to capacity” and area roads are flooded.

Residents are being told not to drive on flooded roads and to avoid low-lying areas.

A county official told Global News the alert was issued because 15 to 20 roads in the county were flooded and it was unknown how deep the water was and what kind of debris may be floating there.

On Wednesday afternoon, officials provided an update to say Range Road 63 south of Township Road 555 had been barricaded. They said Range Road 41 south of Township Road 570 was also barricaded.

They said water damaged parts of the road on Township Roads 572, 564, 563, 561, 560, 554 and 550 as well as Range Roads 63, 61, 55, 54, 53, 50 and 45.

Crews were working on the problem. It was unknown how much damage, if any, the flooding has caused.

Lac Ste. Anne County is about a one-hour drive northwest of Edmonton.

Tuesday’s alert comes a day after an emergency alert was issued for the town of Westlock, northwest of Edmonton. It was just one of several central and northern Alberta communities slammed by severe weather Monday night.
