A mystery about stolen photo albums, discovered after an East Vancouver break-in, has now been solved.
The thieves who robbed Oshy Parasol’s Strathcona home left behind photos that didn’t belong to them or Parasol.
Once she discovered the photos earlier this month, she posted flyers all around her community searching for the rightful owners.
Since Global News aired this story, the younger man who appears in the photos travelling with his elderly friend has come forward.
“It was the younger me standing next to Brian,” said Vancouver resident Danny Yu.
Brian, who his friends called “Bruno,” died in 2005 at the age of 94 from melanoma.
Parasol said she had imagined the elderly man had lived “life to the fullest” and according to Yu, he did.

Brian’s life story is just as interesting as the photos that portray it.
Parasol said she’s thought a lot about who the older man was, what kind of life he lived and who might be missing these memories.
“It’s truly overwhelming to actually hear from the younger gentleman in the photo … such an amazing story.”
“He was born on May 15, 1911, in Ostrava of Czech Republic,” said Yu.

Yu said Brian was part of the anti-Nazi resistance in Czechoslovakia during the Second World War.
“When the Nazi Germans occupied his country, he naturally had became one of those on their most-wanted list.”
He escaped to England, joined the British army to fight the Nazis, was later posted to Hong Kong where he met Yu, retired and lived there for over 40 years. He moved to B.C. in the 90s finally settling in Vancouver.
“He was assigned to a special unit that was commissioned to lay the ground works for the notorious D-day invasion battle. He was seriously injured in a mission before D-day happened. He found himself lying in the bed of the Canadian war hospital when he regained consciousness. He always remained grateful to the Canadians for this,” adds Yu.
Because of his age, Yu, provided assistance for his friend on his travels.
Yu says Brian gave away many of his photo albums to friends, and he doesn’t know who he gave the albums in question to. Both Parasol and Yu suspect the burglars had robbed the owner of the photo album’s house, took the albums for some reason and then accidentally dropped it after they robbed Parasol’s house. Who Brian gave it to, and why the thieves took it and left it behind while robbing Parasol’s house still remains a mystery.
For Yu, the mystery of the stolen photos has brought back fond memories of a “loving, likable man.”
Parasol feels even closer to the man who she was only introduced to through photos.
“To learn about Brian’s courageous life and knowing what he fought for. I adore and respect this man.”
A man she’ll never meet, but now holds dear to her heart.
