Thousands of runners will take over the streets of downtown this weekend for the Edmonton marathon.
The marathon, which starts and ends at the Shaw Conference Centre, will lead to major delays in the downtown core with road closures and bus detours in place. (See route map below).
Here’s what you need to know if you’re heading downtown this weekend.
Road closures Saturday, Aug. 20
Jasper Avenue between 97 and 99 Streets will be closed in both directions all day Saturday. 102 Avenue can be used as an alternate route.
Road closures Sunday, Aug 21
Jasper Avenue will be closed between 95 Street and 108 Street from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m.
Commuters should expect partial road closures on 108 Street, 102 Avenue, 118 Street and 104 Avenue/Stony Plain Road. Major traffic delays are expected downtown and west to 136 Street, including Stony Plain Road, between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Partial road closures will be in place east of downtown on Jasper Avenue, 82 Street, 112 Avenue, 76 Street, 110 Avenue, 75 Street, Ada Boulevard, 40 Street, 105 Avenue, 30 Street, 111 Avenue and 32 Street.
Partial road closures will also be in effect west of downtown on St. George’s Crescent, Ravine Drive, 142 Street, 89A Avenue, 140 Street, 87 Avenue, 137 Street, Valleyview Crescent, Valleyview Drive, 95 Avenue, Riverside Drive and Summit Drive.

ETS detours and bus stop closures
ETS routes 2, 3, 5, 100, 120 and 308 will all be detoured between 6 a.m. Saturday until 8 p.m. Sunday.
Routes 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 15, 57, 86, 100, 112, 130, 140, 141, 142 and 151 will be detoured from the start of service Sunday until about 5 p.m.
Anyone heading into downtown is urged to give themselves extra time. ETS customers can use the trip planner on the city’s website to plan their route ahead of time. A full list of bus detours can also be viewed on the city’s website.
Parking
Parking restrictions start at 6 a.m. Sunday. Weekend rates will be in place at downtown parkades and meters. Drivers are asked to pay attention to posted signs.
Neighbourhood access
Many areas along the race route will only allow local access.
More than 4,000 people are signed up to race in the Edmonton marathon, which includes a marathon, half marathon, 10 kilometre, five kilometre and one kilometre run.
