RIO DE JANEIRO – Canada’s Jacqueline Simoneau and Karine Thomas have qualified for the synchronized swimming duet final at the Rio Olympics.

Simoneau, 19, of Saint-Laurent, Que., and Thomas, 27, of Gatineau, Que., placed seventh in qualifying with a score of 179.3583.

The Canadians were 15.1661 points behind the first-place Russian team of Natalia Ishchenko and Svetlana Romashina.

China’s Huang Xuechen and Sun Wenyan qualified in second place and Japan’s Yukiko Inui and Risako Mitsui placed third.

Simoneau and Thomas are double gold medallists from the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto, winning in the duet and team events, but the Pan Am competition didn’t include most of the top swimmers in the world.

Thomas placed fourth in the team event at the 2012 London Olympics.
