You can call broadcast journalism a lot of things, but dull is not one of them. The only common thread linking today from yesterday to tomorrow is the level of dedication we all have to getting the best story to air come 5.30 PM. What we go through to get our stories is a bit of a trade secret. You're not able to see us madly doing research or running from place to place for interviews. Nor do you get to see the many ways we twist ourselves to get our microphones in news conferences (or "scrums") while being respectful of our colleagues. I can’t count how many times I've sat on the floor holding a bunch of microphones so my head wouldn’t be in the way of the cameras. The next time you watch a story and see a mad crush of reporters and the interview subject is looking down or off to the side, it's because he or she is trying to make eye contact with the reporter. Sometimes the stuff that doesn't make the story is pretty funny. Here are a few recent behind the scenes highlights courtesy of my shooter/editor Kurt Brownridge.
