Conservation officers were called to North Vancouver Monday morning after a bear chased a man running along the Capilano Pacific Trail, south of Cleveland Dam.
Christopher Lubell says he was jogging when he saw a bear sitting in his path.
He turned around and started running the other way and the animal gave chase. Lubell says he stopped because he realized he couldn’t outrun the bear.
The animal then caught up to him and ended up sniffing him, including sticking its nose in his crotch.
Lubell says he walked backwards for about three kilometres, yelling and screaming at the bear the whole time.
The bear finally ran away when a neighbour called police and officers arrived on scene.
Lubell has cuts and bruises from falling but is otherwise OK.
Conservation officers are now looking for the bear and say they are hoping to trap the bear, not “needlessly destroy it.”

On Saturday, a 10-year-old girl was mauled by a bear in Port Coquitlam. The bear was euthanized and her eight-month-old cub was brought to the Critter Care Wildlife shelter in Langley.
