REGINA – The RCMP and Saskatchewan government are trying to put the brakes on speeders in construction zones after a young worker was killed.
Highways Minister Don McMorris says Mounties will begin traffic enforcement blitzes in the busiest orange zones.
It is expected to cost about $15,000 in overtime for officers until the end of this construction season.
McMorris says about 175 tickets are issued each year in orange zones, but he adds more needs to be done because workers say speed continues to be an issue.
The government is also looking at more enforcement measures for next year.
An 18-year-old woman who was working as a flag person was hit by an SUV in a construction zone last month.
Ashley Dawn Richards, who was originally from Lakeside, N.B., was hit Aug. 24 near Midale, southeast of Weyburn.
The RCMP has said charges are pending against the driver of the SUV, a 44-year-old man who has not been named.
