A West Kelowna woman with mobility issues who was rescued from her burning home early Saturday morning is left shaken up from the ordeal.

Officials were called to Westview Village around 4 a.m. for a report of an occupant inside a burning modular home.

When crews got to the scene they reported seeing heavy smoke coming from the back of the residence, according to West Kelowna Fire Rescue (WKFR) assistant fire chief Brent Watson.

“Firefighters conducted an immediate search and quickly located the occupant, who has limited mobility, just inside the front door,” Watson said.

The fire was put out using hand lines but not before the flames spread to an adjoining room.

“A total of 16 WKFR firefighters attended the scene, supported by additional firefighters on standby at Westbank, Lakeview Heights and Rosevalley,” Watson said.

Damage to the home is estimated at $50,000, according to Watson.

“There were no injuries to either people or pets and the occupant is staying with friends.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation but it’s not believed to be suspicious.

“WKFR reminds all residents to have working smoke alarms in their homes and to check them regularly,” Watson said.
