2 Brandon police officers charged with obstructing justice

Two Brandon police officers have been charged with obstruction of justice, following an investigation that launched in 2015.

Provincial justice officials asked Winnipeg police to launch an investigation into the conduct of a Brandon officer in January 2015. 

The complainant in this matter said he was been assaulted by a Brandon police officer he encountered at a Brandon bar in the 1000 block of 18th Street on Nov. 22, 2014.

In a media statement, Brandon police said the complainant had a family relationship with another officer on the force.

When Winnipeg police completed their investigation criminal charges were laid against two Brandon police officers on July 11.

Sergeant Dallas Lockhart is charged with one count of attempt to obstruct justice and one count of obstruct police officer. Constable Shane Stephenson is charged with one count of obstruction of justice. Both men  have been with the Brandon Police Service for 20 years.

The two officers have been placed on administrative leave and are scheduled to appear in a Brandon court at a later date.

“The Brandon Police Service takes allegations of this nature very seriously,” said the Brandon police in a media release. “The public can be assured that the Brandon Police Service has taken and will continue to take the necessary steps to maintain confidence in the police service.”
