RCMP are warning people about a scam involving prepaid cards.
Police say victims are being called by someone claiming to be from, ATCO, Enmax or Epcor, stating that if they don’t pay their bill within a short time, their utilities will be cut off.”
The caller then states they must buy a prepaid card, such as iTunes or gas cards, and call them with the code on the back.
Agencies will never ask you to pay outstanding balances with gift cards.
“If you are in doubt, check your last statement and your records before paying,” said a police release Tuesday. “Call the numbers for the agencies as they appear on your statement, to verify they have enlisted outside help to collect their fees.”
As well, RCMP would like to remind people to never give out any personal or banking information over the phone.
If anyone has information about this, or any other crimes is asked to please contact the Cochrane RCMP at 403-851-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
