August long weekend is one of the busiest driving weekends of the year as many Albertans take advantage of one of the last long weekends of summer.

Unlike previous years, some lucky Lethbridge motorists have low prices at the pump to look forward to.

“Gas prices over the last few months have been decreasing – in June they were around a $1.07 (per litre),” Brent Morris, president of Gas King, said. “Now they’ve dropped to just a little bit over 90 cents (per litre) in Lethbridge. Drivers are getting a little bit of a break at the pump.”

Long weekends are often characterized by high pump prices as many hit the highway.

“Generally, before the long weekends – Thursday afternoon and Fridays – generally our business spikes,” Morris said. “It is busy over a long weekend.”

According to Albertagasprices.com, since mid-June, gas prices declined by over 20 per cent. Drivers filling up at the pump on Thursday expressed their happiness about the lower prices.

“Gas prices are low, I bet everyone will enjoy that,” Chris Sarazin said. “We do go out every weekend and at times, it has been upwards of $150 to fill up.”

“It shocks me when I go inside and the price – instead of $60 is $40 – I love that,” Ed Weistra said. “Usually the price goes up on long weekends, not down.”

On Thursday evening, Costco had the cheapest gas at 87 cents per litre while many stations across the city weren’t far behind, sitting at 90 cents per litre.
