UPDATE: Peachland fire 50 per cent contained

A wildfire near Peachland that destroyed four homes is now 50 per cent contained.

Three out of the four homes affected are in the Peachland district; the fourth home is an abandoned building.

A number of other structures have also sustained damage.

“Our hopes are with those who have suffered loss in the fire and those who are still waiting to hear news about their homes,” said Peachland Mayor Keith Fielding in a press conference this morning.

Fielding called the emergency response “exceptional.”

“At this time, there were no injuries reported, and for that we are very grateful,” said Fielding.

More than 1500 people were evacuated from their homes last night after the fire grew to about 200 hectares. The fire is spread three kilometres from top to bottom.

Fire crews are expecting to see winds of up to 50 km/h, and are still very concerned about the blaze. They will be out working hard today to deal with hot spots.

There are 17 trucks and 65 firefighters working on the fire.

Fire cause investigators looking into the cause of the fire, but say it was a “wind driven event.”

Meanwhile, the RCMP are working on maintaining the security of the fire affected area.

Police say evacuations from their perspective went ‘fairly well’. The vast majority of people complied with the order, but some people tried to return.

Peachland elementary school, which is home to 227 students, is under evacuation order and has been closed for the day.

Parents were asked to make alternate arrangements for today.

A contingency plan is in the works, and would involve staff and students reporting to George Pringle Elementary in Westbank tomorrow morning if the evacuation order is not lifted by then.
