The mayoral race in Regina now has a familiar name but a different face.
Tony Fiacco, the older brother of former mayor Pat Fiacco announced Monday morning that he will be challenging incumbent Mayor Michael Fougere in the upcoming civic election on Oct. 26.
“I want to review and improve the condition of this city and ensure our tax dollars are being spent wisely,” Fiacco said during an announcement on Monday.
He also identified infrastructure and crime, especially in his neighbourhood of North Central, as being an area that needs to be addressed.
The provincial public servant and independent business owner was quiet on details about his platform, only saying it will be released in the next few weeks.
However, he also admitted to the approximately dozen people in attendance that they shouldn’t misinterpret his image for his passion.
“I don’t look like the kind of man who should be running,” Fiacco said.
“I’m not the best public speaker but I am passionate about this city.”
Missing in attendance was his younger brother and former Regina mayor of 12 years, Pat Fiacco. When asked how his brother felt about him running, Tony Fiacco said he wanted to focus on his campaign.
“This is about me running and how I’m going to do things and it’s not about Pat Fiacco.”
