A young offender considered dangerous escaped custody in central Saskatchewan on Thursday afternoon.

Ministry of Justice spokesperson Drew Wilby said that at around 12:10 p.m., the youth from the North Battleford Youth Centre escaped from two corrections staff while on escorted leave to the Red Pheasant First Nation.

Wilby said he was on a supervised leave at a family funeral on the First Nation.

“Youth and others are able to leave under certain circumstances, under certain events that may be going on, such as family events or others,” Wilby said.

“I don’t mean a family birthday. It means significant events that might occur in a young person’s life.”

North Battleford RCMP were immediately notified.

He is believed to be near the Red Pheasant First Nation.

“We believe this youth, as well the RCMP believe this youth, to be dangerous,” Wilby said.

“The charges against him are very serious in nature, including some violent offences.”

According to police, the youth should not be approached. Instead, if seen, the public is asked to call local police or RCMP.

Wilby said as a result of this investigation, the boy is subject to a charge of escaping lawful custody and potentially others, depending on a police investigation.

He also said the boy was under secure custody, unlike the teenage girl accused of killing a baby boy in Saskatoon who had escaped open custody the day before the death.

Wilby said there will be an internal investigation to determine how the boy escaped custody.
