Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Calgary at around 2:50 p.m. Sunday.

The agency said it was tracking a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts, up to toonie-size hail and heavy rain.

They said this line was located from near Priddis to Mossleigh and was moving slowly.

Severe thunderstorms are expected to continue into the evening.

Environment Canada said severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes and residents of Calgary spotted several funnel clouds throughout the afternoon.

The weather agency said funnel clouds are created by weak rotation under quickly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. It also said the weak rotation is not usually a hazard near the ground but there is a chance it could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.

According to Environment Canada, if a funnel cloud develops nearby, people are asked to prepare to take shelter and to continue monitoring alerts and forecasts.
