It was a bizarre discovery for a woman in Prince George.
Lee Taylor was mowing the lawn when she found a nine kilogram mushroom in her backyard.
The mushroom was so large that a regular kitchen scale could not handle it.
“When it was in its full size I was struggling to walk from the greenhouse across to the house,” said Taylor.
It’s called a giant puffball mushroom. They’re often found Europe and usually grow up to 70 centimetres wide, but the largest ever recorded was 2.5 meters across.
“In the 40 years I’ve been studying mushrooms I’ve never seen a giant puffball,” said Keith Egger with the University of Northern British Columbia’s Ecosystems Sciences and Management program.
He says the wet weather in Prince George allowed this mammoth mushroom to thrive.
Taylor has held on to the giant mushroom – but when she found a much smaller one in her yard a few days after, she decided to fry it up with some butter and eat it.
