Weekend Paralympics results for Canada

ATHLETICS

Men

F44 amputee javelin throw – Alister McQueen, Calgary, finished seventh in the final with a new Canadian record of 49.32 metres.

T54 wheelchair 100-metres – Curtis Thom, Mississauga, Ont., finished sixth in the final in 14.74 seconds.

T53 wheelchair 400 metres – Eric Gauthier, St-Frautin Lac-Carre, Que., finished fourth in his qualifying heat and did not advance to the final.

Women

T54 wheelchair 5,000 metres – Keira-Lyn Frie, Saskatoon, finished fourth in the final in 12:28.26. Diane Roy, Sherbrooke, Que., finished ninth in 12:29.27.

BOCCIA

Mixed Team Event BC1-BC2 – The mixed team (BC1-2) of Adam Dukovich and Tammy McLeod, both London, Ont., Brock Richardson, Brampton, Ont., and Dave Richer, Ste-Julie, Que., lost 22-0 to Thailand and tied China 5-5.

BC4 Mixed Pairs – The team of Marco Dispaltro, St-Jerome, Que., and Josh VanderVies, Vancouver, defeated Thailand 6-1 and Great Britain 4-1.

BC3 Mixed Pairs Events – The team of Bruno Garneau, Montreal, and Paul Gauthier, Vancouver, defeated South Korea 5-4 but then lost 3-2 to Greece.

CYCLING

Individual Pursuit – Robbi Weldon, Thunder Bay, Ont., and Lyne Bessette, Knowlton, Que., finished seventh in their qualifying heat in 3:45.698 and did not advance to the final.

EQUESTRIAN

Para-equestrian

Eleonore Elstone, Langley, B.C. (riding Zareno), finished seventh with score of 68.226 per cent in the Grade VI Individual Championship Test.

Jody Schloss, Toronto (riding Inspector Rebus), finished 11th with a score of 67.700 per cent in the Grade 1A Team Test.

In team competition, Canada finished eighth out of 16 countries.

GOALBALL

Men – Canada lost to Algeria 8-6 in a preliminary game. Canada (1-3) plays China next on Monday.

Women – Canada defeated Australia 3-1 in a preliminary game. Canada (1-1) plays Japan next on Monday.

ROWING

Women

Singles – Joan Reid, Enderby, B.C., finished sixth in 5:55.92 in the overall competition.

Mixed fours (with cox) – Canada finished seventh in the B final in 3:31.17.

SAILING

One Person Keel Boat – Paul Tingley, Halifax, finished second in his third race and 10th in his fourth race.

Two-Person Mixed Boat – Stacie Louttit and John McRoberts, both Victoria, finished third in their third race and fourth in their fourth race.

Three-Person Keel Boat – The team of Logan Campbell, Saskatoon; Scott Lutes, Montreal; and Bruce Millar, Victoria, finished 11th in their third race and eighth in their fourth race.

SHOOTING

Mixed R4-10, air rifle standing – Doug Blessin, Port Coquitlam, B.C., finished 24th in his qualifying match with a score of 590 and did not adfance to the final.

T53 wheelchair 400 metres – Brent Lakatos, Dorval, Que., won the silver medal in 50.71.

S11 100 backstroke – Donovan Tildesley, Vancouver, finished seventh in the final.

S13 100 freestyle – Devin Gotell, Antigonish, N.S., finished 14th.

S14 200 individual medley – Michael Heath, Woodstock, Ont., finished 17th.

Women

S13 100 freestyle – Valerie Grand’Maison, Montreal, won the silver medal in 1:00.07.

S7 200 individual medley – Brianna Nelson, Victoria, won the silver medal in 2:54.42.

S8 50 freestyle – Morgan Bird, Calgary, finished eighth in the final in 32.70.

S11 100 backstroke – Amber Thomas, Drayton Valley, Alta., finished ninth.

S14 200 individual medley – Jana Murphy, Victoria, and Kirstie Kasko, Calgary, finished 13th and 14th, respectively.

WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL

Men – Canada defeated Germany 73-66 in a preliminary game. Canada has already advanced to the quarter-finals. Patrick Anderson, Fergus, Ont., had his second triple-double of the tournament with 25 points, 15 rebounds, and 12 assists, while Bo Hedges, Wonowon, B.C., added 24 points. Canada (4-0) plays Colombia next on Monday.

Women – Canada defeated Brazil 65-51 in a preliminary game. Janet McLachlan, Vancouver, led the way with 36 points and 23 rebounds to pick up another double-double. Canada (2-1) plays Great Britain next on Monday.

WHEELCHAIR TENNIS

Men’s singles – Philippe Bedard, Bromont, Que., lost his second-round match to Gustavo Fernandez, Argentina, 6-0, 6-0, and is eliminated from the singles tournament.

Men’s doubles – Joel Dembe, Toronto, and Bedard, lost to Marc McCarroll and Gordon Reid, Great Britain, 6-3, 6-1 and are eliminated from the doubles tournament.

ARCHERY

Men

Norbert Murphy, Vaudreuil-Dorion, Que., defeated Peter Kinik, Slovakia, 6-0 in the quarter-finals of compound bow ARW1. Murphy faces Jeff Fabry, U.S., next in the semifinals on Monday.

ATHLETICS

Women

T52 200 metres – Michelle Stilwell, Nanoose Bay, B.C., won the gold medal in a new Paralympic Games record of 33.80 seconds.

Men

T13 visually impaired 100 metres – Braedon Dolfo, Langley, B.C., finished seventh in the final in 11.27.

T54 wheelchair 100 metres – Curtis Thom, Mississauga, Ont., finished third in his qualifying heat in 14.47. He advanced to the final on Sunday. Colin Mathieson, Winnipeg, finished sixth in 15.25 and did not advance to the final.

T44 amputee 200 metres – Alister McQueen, Calgary, finished third in his qualifying heat in 24.25 and did not advance to the final.

CYCLING

Women

500m time trial (C4-5) – Marie-Claude Molnar, Ste-Adele, Que., finished 10th with a personal best of 42.228.

One-km time trial – Daniel Chalifour, Mont-Laurier, Que., and pilot Alexandre Cloutier, St-Antoine-de-Tilly, Que., finished eighth in 1:05.433.

EQUESTRIAN

Lauren Barwick, Aldergrove, B.C. (riding Off to Paris), finished sixth in the Grade II Individual Championship Test with a score of 71.857 per cent. Ashley Gowanlock, Surrey, B.C. (riding Maile), finished sixth in the Grade 1B Team Test with a score of 69.304 per cent.

GOALBALL

Men – Canada (Brendan Gaulin, Vancouver; Bruno Hache, Dorval, Que.; Mario Caron, St-Eustache, Que.; Ahmad Zeividavi, Vancouver; Simon Tremblay, Alma, Que.; Doug Ripley, New Westminster, B.C.), defeated South Korea 5-4 in a preliminary game. Gaulin scored three and Caron had two for the Canadians. Canada demonstrated they are here to compete. Canada (1-2) plays Algeria next on Sunday.

Women – Canada (Ashlie Andrews, Penticton, B.C.; Whitney Bogart, Marathon, Ont.; Amy Kneebone, Charlottetown; Jill MacSween, Halifax, Ont.; Nancy Morin, Longueuil, Que.; Cassie Orgeles, Nepean, Ont.; coach: Janice Dawson, Calgary), lost 2-1 to Sweden in its first preliminary game. Kneebone scored the Canadian goal.

JUDO

Men

+100kg – Tony Walby, Ottawa, won his first match against a French opponent by ippon. Walby was then defeated by Jimenez Dominguez, Cuba, but advanced to the repechage. Walby lost that match to Ilham Zakiyev, Azerbaidjan, and was eliminated.

-100kg – Tim Rees, Victoria, lost to Joe Ingram, Great Britain, in his first match and did not advance to the repechage.

ROWING

Women

Joan Reid, Enderby, B.C., finished second in the repechage in 5:49.77 and advanced to the A final on Sunday.

Mixed Fours (with cox) – Canada (Meghan Montgomery, Victoria; Vicky Nolan, Toronto; David Blair, Ottawa; Tony Theriault, Nanaimo, B.C.; Kristen Kit (cox), London, Ont.), finished third in the repechage in 3:28.82 and advanced to the B final on Sunday.

SAILING

Men

One person keel boat – Paul Tingley, Halifax, finished fourth in his first race and eighth in his second race.

Two person mixed boat – Stacie Louttit and John McRoberts, both Victoria, finished fourth in their first race and third in their second race.

Three person keel boat – Canada (Logan Campbell, Saskatoon; Scott Lutes, Montreal; Bruce Millar, Victoria) finished fifth in their first race and ninth in their second race.

SHOOTING

Men

Mixed R5-10m air rifle prone – Doug Blessin, Port Coquitlam, B.C., finished 25th in his qualification match and did not advance to the final.

Mixed R3-10m air rifle prone – Christos Trifonids, Vancouver, finished 26th in his qualification match and did not advance to the final.

SWIMMING

Women

S13 50 freestyle – Valerie Grand’Maison, Montreal, won the silver medal in 27.91.

S8 100 breaststroke – Katarina Roxon, Stephenville, N.L., finished fifth in 1:27.07 in the preliminaries.

S11 50 freestyle – Amber Thomas, Drayton Valley, B.C., finished sixth with a personal best of 32.94 in the preliminaries.

S7 100 breaststroke – Sarah Mehain, Vernon, B.C., and Brianna Nelson, Victoria, finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in the final.

S10 100 butterfly – Brianna Jennett-McNeill, Russell, Ont., finished ninth in the preliminaries.

S13 50 freestyle – Rhea Schmidt, Winnipeg, finished ninth in the preliminaries.

S5 200 freestyle – Valerie Drapeau, Montreal, finished 13th in the preliminaries.

Men

S10 100 butterfly – Nathan Stein, Surrey, B.C., finished ninth in the preliminaries and did not advance to the final. Isaac Bouckley, Whitby, Ont., finished 17th and did not advance to the final.

WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL

Men – Canada defeated Poland 83-65 in a preliminary game. With the win Canada has already advanced to the quarter-finals. Patrick Anderson, Fergus, Ont., led the way with 34 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds (all game highs). Richard Peter, Vancouver, added 12 points; Bo Hedges, Wonowon, B.C., had nine; and David Eng, Montreal, and Adam Lancia, Toronto, both scored eight. Canada (3-0)plays Germany next on Sunday.

Women – Canada defeated Australia 57-50 in a preliminary game. Janet McLachlan, Vancouver, had a game-high 28 points and 21 rebounds. Canada (1-1) plays Brazil next on Sunday.

WHEELCHAIR TENNIS

Men’s singles

Joel Dembe, Toronto, lost his first-round match to Dave Phillipson, Great Britain, 6-2, 6-2.

Philippe Bedard, Bromont, Que., won his first-round match against Lhaj Boukartacha, Morocco, 7-5, 6-2.
