Severe thunderstorm causes extensive flooding across Calgary

WATCH ABOVE: Parts of southern Calgary were flooded after a severe thunderstorm passed through the city Tuesday. Roads turned into lakes and hail turned streets and parking lots white. Mia Sosiak reports – Jul 13, 2016

A severe thunderstorm that passed through the Calgary area Tuesday afternoon caused heavy downpours and flash flooding across the city.

Environment Canada issued a warning at 3:45 p.m. about a severe thunderstorm located over south Calgary that was sitting “nearly stationary.”

The rainfall caused floodwaters to swamp vehicles parked at the Southland LRT station.

At Heritage station, meanwhile, vehicles were pelted with hail.

Roads like Bow Bottom Trail were also flooded, leaving some vehicles and drivers stranded.

Environment Canada issues severe thunderstorm warnings when storms are likely to produce large hail, damaging winds or torrential rainfall.
