Edmonton police hand out 3,030 speeding tickets in 24 hours

In a one-day traffic blitz earlier this week, the Edmonton Police Service handed out nearly 3,500 tickets to drivers, the majority of which were for speeding.

Edmonton police held a 24-hour traffic blitz on Thursday, July 7. Police issued 3,449 tickets and 3,030 of those were given to those not abiding by the posted speed limit.

Police said 255 drivers were slapped with seat belt infractions. Another two charges were handed out for Criminal Code offences.

Edmonton police conduct traffic enforcement campaigns like this throughout the year in an effort to improve safety on city streets. In a recent blitz held in March, police handed out 2,363 tickets over a 24-hour period.

According to recent data released by the City of Edmonton, there were 25,517 collisions on city streets in 2015, up 3.6 per cent from 2014.
