TORONTO – Wife Ann and running mate Paul Ryan did their parts. The big question on the convention floor all day Thursday was this: Would 65-year-old Mitt Romney let his guard down and let Americans in?
According to the tears in the audience, he did his part in his high-stakes speech, the most important of his life. Romney took aim at Obama’s record, saying Americans deserved better than the president. The prime-time speech was clearly aimed at the disaffected Obama voters tuning into the convention, rather than the thousands of like-minded Republicans gathered in Tampa, as Romney reiterated time and again: Obama is a failure. Using Wordle, an online tool, we can get an unscientific look at the major themes of their speeches. In the graphic below, the more times a word was said, the larger it appears.
Mitt Romney’s speech used America very frequently, as well as the words, Obama, jobs, Americans and better future.

His wife Ann also used the word America frequently, but Mrs. Romney also used more emotion-provoking words such as like, love, talk, good and want in her speech. She also used her husband’s name more than marriage, as an example.
Running mate Paul Ryan’s speech also mentioned the word Mitt a lot, as well as the words government, president Obama, Medicare, generation and new.
