Rodney wins 200 metres at Olympic trials in Edmonton

Canada has another star sprinter as Brendon Rodney of Hamilton became just the second Canadian in history to break the 20-second barrier in the 200 metres on Sunday.

Rodney crossed in 19.96 seconds to win the 200 metres at the Canadian Olympic track and field trials beating a field that included Toronto’s Aaron Brown and Andre De Grasse of Markham, Ont.

Brown (20.32) finished second while De Grasse (20.32) was third.

Rodney won his semifinal heat in 20.25 seconds, easing up before the finish line.

De Grasse, winner of the 100 metres the previous night, ran a relaxed 20.56 to win his semifinal, while Brown cruised to an easy 20.95 to win his, setting up the thrilling final.

De Grasse twice broke the Canadian record in the event last season, which was previously held by Brown.

Canada will name its Olympic team on Monday.
