Man wanted for second-degree murder in Onoway homicide arrested and charged

RCMP say Casey Potts, wanted for second-degree murder and attempted robbery in connection with a man’s death in Onoway, Alta. last week, has been arrested.

Police allege Potts and his girlfriend Sharisse Monkman were with Glen Allen Abbott before he was found dead at an Onoway residence on Sunday, June 26, 2016.

RCMP issued a warning about Potts earlier this week, asking anyone with information about him to contact them.

Monkman had already been arrested on robbery charges.

Officers believe the trio attempted to steal a car at gunpoint from a woman and her six-year-old son as they left a graduation ceremony. RCMP said the woman was able to alert security personnel at the grad and police were called.

Early last week, police ruled Abbott’s death a homicide, but did not release the cause of his death.

Potts has since been charged with second-degree murder, attempted robbery using a firearm, using a firearm while committing an indictable offence, careless use of a firearm, pointing a firearm, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

He is set to appear in Stony Plain Provincial Court on July 13.

Onoway is located about 65 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.
