New numbers show property crime and gun violence is on the rise in the Queen City.
Monthly statistics by the Regina Police Service show a startling 333 per cent increase in attempted murder cases with 13 so far this year, compared to three for the same time last year.
Property crimes in May also spiked 22 per cent increase.
In total, 805 more property crime cases have been reported, while there were 284 more cases of theft under $5,000.
At the Board of Police Commissioners Meeting Wednesday morning, acting Chief Dean Rae attributed the rise in property crime to the economic downturn and to an increase in drugs in the city.
“We continue to work with our partners to do some collaborative efforts to try and work and alleviate some of the concerns with the property crimes in the city.”

However, police say work is being done to curb gun crimes as 95 firearms have been seized since May 1st.
“We’ve had a number of break and enter and thefts. So breaking into houses and thefts from vehicles where firearms haven’t been stored safely.”
