Former Alaskan governor Sarah Palin weighed in on Brexit over the weekend, congratulating the United Kingdom on its choice to leave the European Union and encouraging Americans to follow the example set by their “smart” British neighbours.
Palin posted a picture of former Conservative prime minister Margaret Thatcher alongside her Facebook message, which appeared on Friday.
“The Brexit referendum is akin to our own Declaration of Independence,” Palin wrote. “May that refreshed spirit of sovereignty spread over the pond to America’s shores!”
Palin has become a high-profile conservative commentator in the U.S. in the years following her stint as Alaska’s governor. She first became a household name during the 2008 presidential race, when she was chosen as the Republican Party’s vice-presidential nominee.
Palin congratulated the British people “for ignoring all the fear mongering from special interest globalists who tend to aim for that apocalyptic One World Government that dissolves a nation’s self-determination and sovereignty.”
She then dubbed the EU a “One World Government mini-me.”
Palin concluded her message with the hope that the “shackles” of the United Nations would be next on the chopping block.

The outspoken former politician made headlines earlier in the year when she formally endorsed presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
Predictably, her speech quickly became fodder for a sketch on Saturday Night Live featuring Palin impersonator Tina Fey.
