Police have arrested the mother of a newborn baby found dead in a dumpster in London, Ont.
London police received a report of human remains found in a garbage dumpster in the Richmond and Mill Streets area at around 11:30 a.m. Thursday and confirmed they had located a deceased infant.

Investigators said Saturday they had identified the mother of the deceased baby and believe she is also responsible for placing the child in the dumpster. She was arrested early this morning.
The 23-year-old mother has been charged with neglect to obtain assistance in child birth and the disposing of the body of a child after delivery.

The police’s Major Crime Section is continuing to investigate. Officials said Thursday afternoon they had removed the body from the dumpster and had cleared the scene.
An autopsy took place Friday and police are awaiting the results.
No information has been released on the baby’s age, gender or cause of death as Bough said it remains part of the active investigation.

“The circumstances here are obviously quite unusual and you wouldn’t expect something like this to happen anywhere in our community,” Staff Sgt. Blair Harvey said Thursday.
“This in an area that has a lot of pedestrian traffic, a lot of vehicle traffic, which presents some challenges in terms of securing the crime scene. But certainly, an event like this is unexpected anywhere.”
